Namesake Story

The Michaelis family began ranching in Texas in 1837. M.G. Michaelis was born July 16, 1864. In the 1890s he began raising purebred Shorthorn and Hereford cattle at the ranch in Mountain City in the Kyle area.

In 1934 Michaelis, who had been ranching in Coahuila, Mexico for ten years, was given two purebred Charolais bulls. The bulls were sent to the Kyle Ranch and a successful crossbreeding program was initiated and has continued throughout the years. In 1952 M.G. Michaelis, Jr., purchased the Pugibet herd of purebred domestic Charolais from the original French importers to Mexico. The Michaelis Ranch developed its strong herd of domestic Charolais which is well known around the world. The Michaelis Ranch is recognized statewide, nationwide, and internationally for its contributions to the ranching industry.

Another phase of Michaelis’ early ventures was that of breeding Jacks and Jennets. M.G. Michaelis stated on his business cards that he had more Jennets in his herd than all the breeders in Texas combined. These animals were widely known and were a prize breed. Michaelis sold these donkeys to the Union of South Africa. Max Gustav Michaelis died April 11, 1950. The tradition of purebred Charolais ranching today is carried on at the Kyle Ranch by his grandson, M.G. Michaelis III. The Michaelis Ranch is four miles west of Kyle on FM 150.
